SHORTWAVE A VITAL LINK FOR REMOTE COMMUNITIES

The ABC has announced it will cut its shortwave service to remote parts of the Northern Territory, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.

NT Labor Senator Malarndirri McCarthy says the decision was made without proper consultation with affected communities, including those living and working in remote areas.

She says a vital link to the outside world - particularly in the event of a natural disaster or weather emergency - will be severed.

But the ABC maintains that shortwave technology is outdated and unviable.
