MEDIA RELEASE: SAVAGE CUTS HURT TERRITORIANS

06 April 2018

Territory Labor Federal Members have slammed the $1.4 billion cut to the Territorys GST revenue, which comes on top of Turnbull's savage cuts to health and education.

This cut will hurt Territorians every single day.Essential services are already stretched to breaking point and the additional cuts will make everyday life difficult for Territorians.

The NT Government are doing all they can based on the dire economic situation given to them by the last CLP Government, but yet again the Turnbull Government has shown that it is no friend of the Territory.

This Federal Government continues to treat Territorians like second class citizens. Weve already seen cuts to every single public school in the Territory, hospitals and university.

These GST distribution cuts are on top of the refusal of the Turnbull Government to fund its share of the implementation of the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT.

The Turnbull Government talks about developing Northern Australia but the $5 billion NAIF fund has failed to spend a single cent in the NT. Territorians deserve a Government who will deliver more than just rhetoric.

Recent reporting from the ABS shows that the NT has some of the most disadvantaged communities in the country, and the Federal Government responds with further cuts.

The Territory was one of only two jurisdictions whose GST share was reduced. This follows the Turnbull Government's savage cuts to essential services, an unacceptable outcome for the Territory.
