MEDIA RELEASE: NAIDOC CELEBRATING FIRST NATIONS WOMEN - BECAUSE OF HER, WE CAN

09 July 2018

The 2018 NAIDOC theme is Because of Her, We Can! First Nations women have and continue to play very significant roles at all levels of our communities.

For the last 65,000 years, Fist Nations women have carried Dreaming stories, songlines, languages and knowledge that have kept Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures strong and thriving.

This week I am encouraging all Australians to support NAIDOC week. A National week of celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.

Across Australia, we have many First Nations women who are leaders. From activists, politicians and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have fought for justice, equal rights, our rights to Country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art.

There are many First Nations Women from across the NT who have made great change in their communities and across Australia. These women can be leaders in their professional fields and women working to keep their communities and families strong.

For more than 65,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have carried our dreaming stories, songlines, languages and knowledge that have kept our culture strong and enriched us as the oldest continuing culture on the planet.

NAIDOC Week 2018 will be held nationally from Sunday 8 July through to Sunday 15 July.
