The Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition, which was set up after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull rejected theUluru Statement fromthe Hearthas presented their interim report to Federal Parliament recently.
The committee,which started its hearings in Barunga,has alsovisited communities in West Australia, the ACT andNew South Wales and will be visiting further communities in Queensland& Tasmania.
While the interim report outlines a vast array of support for a First Nations Voice to Parliament, some submissions have stated other views as alternatives stating that Aboriginal sovereignty needs to be recognised before any further progress is made.
Gawura-Yanuwa woman & Senator for the Northern Territory Malarndirri McCarthy is a member of the committee saysthat there has been a diverse array of opinion to the committee, even from people who oppose the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full.
The final report is due to be presented to Federal parliament in November. You can readthe interim reporthere.
