MEDIA RELEASE: TURNBULLS WAR ON YOUNG TERRITORIANS

06 August 2018

Malcolm Turnbulls university funding cuts are hurting Territorians.

Charles Darwin University has been savaged by a $30 million cut. This equates to a 8.1 percent decline in funding, effectively reintroducing a cap on uni places and limiting access to higher education for Territorians.

Young Territorians especially will be disadvantaged by the cuts and may have to choose between pursuing higher education and staying close to their family.

The cuts to Charles Darwin University continue the Abbott-Turnbull Governments war on young Territorians. So far theyve had to wear:

  • cuts to Sunday penalty rates;
  • $3 billion cut from apprentices, TAFE and VET;
  • $70 million cut from Territory schools.

Young Territorians want a Federal Government who invests in mental health services, higher education and training and who engages with young Australians. Not one who gives the big banks a $17 billion tax handout.
