MEDIA RELEASE: LABOR WELCOMES 99 YEAR LEASE IN GUNYANGARA

19 November 2017

The 99-year lease agreement signing at Gunyangara in North East Arnhem Land today is a celebration of self-determination.

Following two years of negotiations, the Gumatj Corporation will make history today signing the first-of-its-kind lease at a ceremony in Gunyangara. The Gumatj Corporation is the first Traditional Owner Corporation to hold a 99-year township lease over its community and lands.

This lease is unique because the decision making authority now sits with the Gumatj. This lease model provides communities with new options when considering what tenure agreements will best support them to achieve their social, cultural and economic aspirations.

This example of local decision making and local control is fundamental to economic development and home ownership, and will attract business opportunities from investors.

We congratulate the Gumatj and the Northern Land Council on their continued work to achieve the ambitions of Traditional Owners.

We welcome this significant announcement that gives Traditional Owner groups authority over their land, putting them at the centre of decision making for their communities.
