An Albanese Labor Government will invest $10.5m in upgrading facilities in remote communities across the Territory and Paul Fitzsimons Oval in Alice Springs.
Sport and outdoor recreation is at the heart of communities across Australia, but for too long remote communities across Central Australia have missed out on the investments they need.
Labor’s package will be designed to deliver the projects that will bring the greatest benefits to local communities, encourage more remote Australians to get involved in their community and to get active.
These investments include new basketball courts, women’s changerooms, upgraded football ovals and a range of shade shelters to make outdoor activity more accessible year-round.
At the same time, Labor will upgrade Paul Fitzsimons Oval at Charles Darwin University, creating another top-quality facility in the heart of Alice.
While Paul Fitzsimons Oval today has a decent playing surface, it is simply not user friendly and is unsuited to hosting major sporting or community events.
There is no lighting, insufficient parking, limited shade and there is no access to change rooms and amenities.
Labor’s investment will redevelop Paul Fitzsimons Oval into a facility accessible to the whole community. This will include installing toilets, change rooms, umpires’ rooms, storage, a canteen, power, shade and water.
Only an Albanese Labor Government will partner with local communities across the Territory to deliver the sporting and recreation facilities they deserve.
Comments attributable to Catherine King, Shadow Minister For Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development
‘Labor’s social infrastructure investments are about ensuring that local communities have the services, facilities and access that they deserve.
'Sport and outdoor recreation is integral to communities around Australia, but up-to-date facilities across remote Australia are sorely lacking.
'These investments will deliver a better life to local families across the Territory.’
Comments attributable to Marion Scrymgour, Labor Candidate for Lingiari
‘Visiting communities across the Territory, I know how important their local facilities are to their day-to-day lives.
‘Sadly though, too many remote communities do not have the facilities they deserve. They are too out of date, they have too little shelter, they are too small and they aren’t accessible to women and young girls.
‘I’m proud that Labor’s package will deliver better facilities to remote communities across the Territory, as well as upgrading facilities in Alice Springs.’
‘This is another great Labor’s announcement that will make life better for locals in Alice Springs and across the Territory.’
