Congratulations Gayili Marika Yunupingu!

I congratulate Gayili Marika Yunupingu on having her outstanding work recognised at last nights National Indigenous Human Rights Awards.

At the ceremony event in Canberra, the Yolngu Elder received the Eddie Mabo Social Justice Award for her work in suicide prevention in her Nhulunbuy community.

Ms Yunupingu is a proud Territorian whose work has touched the lives of many individuals and families. Her work has led to a significant reduction in the number of suicides in her community.

In addition to her community work, she is a prominent suicide prevention campaigner across Australia.

Gayili is a board member of the Federal Government Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Advisory Group. She is also the driving force behind Wesley Mission's One Life program which has now reached more than 70 communities around the nation.
