Labor’s Plan To Close The Gap

Closing the Gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians is a Labor priority. In February 2017 the ninth annual Closing the Gap Report was tabled in the Parliament.

The report showed that there is still much more work to be done – only one of the seven targets is on track. In 2015 the Turnbull Government slashed $500 million in cuts to programs and frontline services, this alone had a very real and damaging impact on individuals and communities.

The flawed design and delivery of the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) is a strong reminder that a paternalistic approach to policy does not work.

Government’s need a new approach – an approach that listens to first Australians, gives them a stronger voice that they control, and recognises that they have the solutions. This is why ALP members of Parliament signed the Redfern Statement in February this year.
